Locate the large letter/number grid first, then use the subgrid inside it. Read the orientation shown by the current map rather than assuming coordinates increase in a familiar screen direction. Community documentation describes a large square as 1 km by 1 km and the smaller divisions as 100 m steps, which is a useful mental model, but the live range readout is the final measurement.
Place the marker at the described position rather than the center of the large square. A one-subgrid error at the spotter can rotate a long bearing line enough to move the intersection materially. Label the marker with the spotter or reference number from the teleprinter.
Match each clue to a geometric shape
A bearing from a known point is a line. Place the measuring pencil at the origin, rotate until its displayed bearing matches the report, and extend the line beyond the likely target area. A distance from a known point is a circle. Set the compass at the origin and expand it to the reported radius. The target lies where compatible shapes intersect.
Two bearing lines usually provide one useful crossing. A bearing and distance provide the intersection between a line and circle; if there are two possible crossings, use the rest of the order, map boundaries, or a second clue to choose. Two distances may create two circle intersections. Do not delete the alternate until another fact excludes it.
When lines fail to meet, inspect the origin labels, digit order, and whether the report referred to a spotter, reference point, or target. Forcing the lines together hides the mistake.
Use colors and markers as an audit trail
Community operator guides use blue markers for spotters/friendlies, green for reference points, and red for enemy/FDC positions. Confirm the current map key, then apply one convention consistently. Use a plain drawing line for movement or uncertainty and reserve the measured/firing line for information that will feed the calculator.
Keep earlier construction lines until the shot is resolved. They show which report produced the target estimate. If a later message updates a spotter, draw the new position and geometry rather than dragging the old mark without a record.
Create the final firing measurement
After choosing the target point, start the firing-solution measurement at the designated origin on the Nest map icon. Detailed community guidance warns against measuring from an arbitrary part of the visible model. Draw to the target and capture the bearing and range that the map supplies.
This final line is different from an observer line. It describes the gun’s relationship to the target and is the input for turret rotation and range calculation. If the Nest repositions, discard the line and rebuild it from the new confirmed origin even when the target did not move.
Carry the target identity with the measurement. A perfect line to the wrong FDC or friendly position is still a bad solution.
Confirm estimates with battlefield evidence
Observer bearings and ranges may contain uncertainty. The official game loop supports reconnaissance imagery and map feedback after shots. Illumination/star shells are also described by the developer as tactical ammunition. Use those systems when the mission permits to replace an estimated marker with observed evidence.
After firing, compare the impact with the target along two axes. A left/right miss suggests geometry or bearing. A short/long miss suggests range, charge count, or elevation. Preserve the impact and target markers while preparing the correction.
The iris or effect guide can help judge whether a shell’s displayed area threatens friendlies or covers a target cluster. Use it visually for the selected shell in the current build; do not turn the graphic into an exact universal blast-radius table without testing.
Common map failures and recovery
- Wrong spotter: match the report number to the marker number before drawing.
- Wrong clue type: a distance must become a circle, not a bearing line.
- Wrong Nest origin: redo only the final firing line from the designated point.
- Premature target marker: keep it provisional until two clues or direct recon support it.
- Stale geometry: rebuild after repositioning, moving-target updates, or new mission intel.
- Overwritten evidence: use a new color/mark for a correction so the previous result remains comparable.
If the map feels cluttered, clear only obsolete planning marks and rebuild the current solution in a consistent order. A clean map with four labeled marks is more valuable than a dense map whose origins are forgotten.

How do I triangulate a target?

Why is my target intersection only approximate?
