Let the teleprinter identify the active objective and keep reference features separate from confirmed targets.

Plot named observers, landmarks, friendly/protected positions, and candidate enemies in distinct layers. A harbor, coast, or city label can be a reference rather than the target. Attach every bearing and range to its source.
If several contacts appear, number them by dispatch. Do not reuse a card merely because two points occupy the same general sector.
Confirm target class and requested effect
Read whether the operation describes an armored, exposed, area, obscuration, illumination, or communication objective. Use the current shell label. Armor-piercing and HE fragmentation are developer-named examples, not an automatic “ship versus shore” rule for every phase.
Mark nearby friendlies and narrative locations before selecting any area-effect ammunition.
Produce phase-specific firing cards
For each active target, record bearing/range from the Nest, shell, charges, elevation, barrel, and objective. Void the card when a dispatch changes the target or effect.
If preparing both guns, keep independent rows. A shared direction does not prove identical ammunition or elevation. Arm only the side whose live state matches its row.
Wait for the siege state to change
After impact, return to the map and teleprinter. A correct hit can reveal a new contact, change priority, or require another effect. Do not fire at map clutter because recognition is not instantaneous.
If the operation does not progress, decide whether the impact missed, the effect was wrong, another stage is waiting, or the wrong contact was selected. Preserve the report and marks.
Protect narrative and friendly outcomes
Player interest in friendlies, cities, and endings means apparently optional fire can have wider consequences, but this page does not guess them. On a first run, follow explicit orders. On an ending test, record the entire campaign sequence.

Naval Commendation method
Complete normally and capture every medal hint. “Naval” and “commendation” are names, not numeric rules. Test accuracy, resource use, assistance, time, target selection, and collateral discipline independently.
Reproduce a gold route on current public content before calling it canonical. Keep screenshots of the in-game medal and Steam achievement separate.
Report Cartagena progression trouble
Include dispatch stage, target label, plotted evidence, shell, firing card, impact, next message, newspaper, patch, and whether a crash occurred. Avoid posting unlabeled ending spoilers.
If the game cannot enter missions after a crash, PATCH 1.0 (1558) contains a relevant fix. Update and verify files before touching save data.
Create a contact board
For a crowded coastal operation, list each contact as friendly, protected, reference, candidate, confirmed objective, or resolved. Attach the dispatch number and intended shell effect. This small board prevents a visually prominent ship, shore feature, or city marker from inheriting the active-target status of another contact.
After firing, move only the confirmed contact to resolved when the mission acknowledges it. If the impact is visible but no response arrives, keep it active and review effect and stage. For a two-barrel plan, add the barrel to the board so a prepared round cannot be applied to the wrong contact after a message change. When sharing help, publish the classification method before exact map positions; it remains useful after minor layout changes and avoids exposing the operation to first-time players.
Before beginning a replay, clear only temporary paper notes and leave the campaign record intact. Recreate the contact board from the new dispatch so the previous route does not silently choose targets. If the new evidence reproduces the same contact order, confidence increases; if it differs, document whether the patch, earlier choice, or operator interpretation changed. This replay discipline is essential before publishing a naval contact as fixed.
