Locate IRON NEST targets by combining spotter bearings, ranges, reference points, circles, and reconnaissance without inventing coordinates.

Triangulation in IRON NEST means turning separate pieces of battlefield intelligence into one defensible target position. A bearing creates a direction from a named origin; a range creates a circle around its origin; an intersection creates a candidate. Only then should you measure bearing and range from the Nest for the actual shot.

Translate every clue into geometry

Write each dispatch as origin, measurement type, value, and subject. “Bearing from observer A” is a ray starting at observer A. “Target is a stated distance from reference B” is a circle centered on B. A reported position is a point. Keeping the origin attached to the number prevents the most common error: drawing every clue from the Nest.

Plot known observers and reference points first. Use the current map legend and labels rather than assuming a color from an old guide. Add one intelligence line at a time and label or remember which message produced it.

Build intersections without false precision

Two bearings from separated observers should cross. A bearing and range circle should cross at one or sometimes two plausible points. Two range circles can also create two candidates. If the geometry leaves alternatives, use map context, target type, another report, or reconnaissance; do not choose the visually convenient point without evidence.

Map drawing width and manual placement introduce uncertainty. Treat a small intersection region as a target estimate rather than pretending one screen pixel is an exact universal coordinate. Zoom consistently, use the finest tool the current interface supplies, and avoid stacking marks until their origins cannot be seen.

Resolve contradictions methodically

If two clues do not meet, re-read compass direction, origin, and units before moving either line. Check whether a value described distance to an observer rather than distance to the Nest. Confirm that a later dispatch did not supersede an earlier moving-target report.

Do not average two incompatible bearings. Preserve both and determine which assumption made them incompatible. A transcription error, wrong reference point, inverted direction, or stale target state has a different fix. Reconnaissance can arbitrate, but spending it before understanding the contradiction may only hide the operator mistake.

Convert target position into gun data

Triangulation locates the target; it does not directly aim the guns. Once the target mark is credible, draw a fresh line from the designated Nest firing origin to the target. That line produces the bearing and range used by the ballistic calculator.

Use reconnaissance as confirmation

The official description and FAQ establish reconnaissance and battlefield-control abilities, but exact unlocks, costs, and icons can vary. When current mission resources permit, use recon to confirm the candidate target or classify an impact. Record whether the icon represents a live target, observer, effect, or report before treating it as a new firing origin.

If reconnaissance disagrees with hand plotting, inspect the plot rather than shifting the gun blindly. The mismatch is valuable evidence about the origin, clue type, or target movement.

Moving and time-sensitive targets

A valid intersection describes the target at the time of its reports. For a moving target, later intelligence can supersede the point. Keep timestamps or message order, and do not combine a new bearing with an old range unless the operation says they describe the same state.

Triangulation checklist
