IRON NEST First Firing Solution

Build and fire a verified first IRON NEST solution from teleprinter intelligence through map plotting, calculator input, loading, aiming, and impact review.

A firing solution is the complete relationship between a target position, the Nest, ammunition, powder, bearing, elevation, and one loaded gun. Treat it as a card that becomes invalid when any of those inputs changes. The objective of a first shot is not speed; it is reaching the newspaper while knowing why the shell landed where it did.

Game: IRON NEST: Heavy Turret Simulator. Scope: Steam AppID 2950790, Windows base-game public version 1.0, checked 2026-08-09. This workflow avoids unverified universal coordinates, powder tables, and real-world artillery formulas.

1. Convert the dispatch into facts

Read the teleprinter message completely. List the objective effect, target description, observer or reference position, bearing, range, friendly restriction, and any timing instruction. Mark which facts are direct and which require a derived intersection. A bearing from an observer is not automatically the bearing from the Nest.

If another message arrives, finish reading it before editing the plot. Preserve the old marks until the new evidence has been reconciled. An unexplained contradiction is a reason to re-read, not permission to average values.

2. Plot the target before measuring the shot

Place known origins on the tactical map. Draw the supplied bearings from their correct origins and range circles from the references that supplied those distances. The target candidate belongs where compatible evidence intersects. Use reconnaissance if the operation makes it available and the planned run allows it.

Only after the target position is credible should you draw from the Nest’s designated firing origin to that point. Read bearing and distance from this final line. Using the edge of the Nest illustration or a nearby grid point can introduce a systematic error. Keep the evidence geometry visible so a miss can be diagnosed later.

3. Create one calculator result

At the ballistic calculator, enter the Nest-to-target range and bearing, select the intended shell context, and choose an accepted powder-charge count. Calculate and write down the resulting elevation. The card should now name target, shell, charges, bearing, elevation, and gun side.

Do not silently substitute the charge count available at the loading station. If supply or requisition forces a different load, return to the calculator and make a new result. A precise elevation for the wrong charge count is still a wrong solution.

4. Requisition and load against the card

Request the exact shell effect needed by the objective, not merely the round with the most dramatic description. Confirm the label when it arrives. Stage the selected gun, follow the onboard loading sequence, add the planned powder, and complete the breech or bridge operations indicated by the station.

Keep a visible count of charges. Community reports about unloading behavior vary by state and version, so prevention is the safe policy: check before committing the shell and each charge. If the actual load differs, label the old card void.

5. Aim and arm one side

Rotate the loaded gun to the recorded bearing, first coarsely and then with the fine control. Set the calculated elevation only when the mechanism allows it. Release each control and read the dial again instead of trusting motion alone.

Trace the loaded side to its arming lever. Arm that gun and leave the other safe unless the plan explicitly includes two verified loads. Compare the complete live state with the card: target, origin, shell, charge count, bearing, elevation, loaded side, armed side.

6. Fire, wait, and classify the evidence

Pull the firing control once. Do not immediately disturb both aiming axes. Wait for the mission’s impact evidence, observer report, objective response, or new teleprinter page. Record whether the error appears directional, range-related, effect-related, or a complete state mismatch.

  • Left/right error points first to target plotting, firing origin, or bearing.
  • Short/long error points first to range, actual powder, or elevation.
  • Accurate impact with no objective effect points to shell or target classification.
  • A wildly unrelated impact calls for checking the gun side and whether a stale card was used.

Change one suspected variable at a time. A second shot made after changing bearing, elevation, ammunition, and target mark cannot teach which correction mattered.

A compact pre-fire callout

Say this before firing: objective, target, Nest origin, range, shell, actual charges, bearing, elevation, loaded side, armed side. The list is short enough to use on every operation and specific enough to catch most operator errors.

After a correct completion, read and dismiss the newspaper through the normal sequence. The developer FAQ makes that end step important to saved Challenge results, and it is a sensible progress boundary in Campaign as well.

If the first solution still fails

Update the game, especially if a crash preceded mission-entry trouble or turret state failed to reset; PATCH 1.0 (1558) addressed both categories. Reopen the Beginner Guide for the full station route, Triangulation for target construction, or Corrections for controlled follow-up shots.
