IRON NEST Beginner Guide

Complete a first IRON NEST firing solution by reading orders, plotting the map, calculating elevation, loading safely, aiming, and diagnosing a miss.

The safest first session in IRON NEST: Heavy Turret Simulator is one complete, carefully documented shot. Do not rush directly to the firing cord. Receive the order, mark known positions, locate the target, measure from the Nest, create a firing card, select the matching ammunition and powder charges, load the gun, set bearing and elevation, arm the intended side, and only then fire. Once that chain makes sense, later missions become variations on a process rather than a room full of mysterious controls.

Applies to: Steam AppID 2950790, Windows base game, public version 1.0, checked 2026-08-08. Keyboard/controller bindings can be remapped and should be read from the current Settings screen; this guide names stations and actions instead of inventing fixed keys.

Orient yourself before accepting a shot

Find four work areas first: the teleprinters that deliver orders and observer intelligence, the tactical map with drawing tools, the ballistic calculator, and the gun/loading controls. Also locate the Requisition Console because ammunition, powder, reconnaissance, and battlefield abilities flow through it. The onboard hint clipboards are part of the tutorial system; read the one at a station before moving its controls.

Open Settings and confirm look sensitivity, interaction prompts, audio, and the current binding layout. The Steam store lists full controller support, but a controller label and a keyboard label are different representations of the same action. Learn the on-screen interaction prompt shown by your active device. If the mouse cannot move after loading, update to the current public build; PATCH 1.0 (1558) specifically improved that failure mode.

Read the order and mark only known facts

Start at the teleprinter. Identify the objective, any named spotter, grid position, bearing, distance, reference point, target type, friendly restriction, and special effect requested. Copy or note each field without “correcting” it from memory. A spotter location is a known origin; a bearing from that spotter is a line of possibility; a range from another origin is a circle; their intersection is a target estimate.

At the map, place blue markers for friendly observers, green markers for reference points, and red markers for enemy targets when those conventions match the current map key. Draw intelligence lines with the measuring tool that shows bearing and distance without replacing the final firing solution. If two lines should intersect but do not, recheck their origins and whether one clue was a distance rather than a bearing.

The Tactical Map Guide explains grids and tools in detail. For a first mission, the important rule is simple: plot evidence in the order it arrived and keep uncertain estimates visually separate from confirmed recon icons.

Turn the target into a firing card

Once the target position is credible, draw the final line from the Nest’s designated origin to the target. The measurement must represent the gun’s position, not an arbitrary point on the Nest illustration. Record the bearing and range produced by that line.

At the ballistic calculator, enter the bearing, select the target and shell categories the current card supports, enter range, and choose a powder-charge count that the machine accepts. Pull the calculate control and inspect the output rather than assuming the first combination is valid. The required elevation belongs to that shell/range/charge combination. If the charge count changes at the loading station, return to the calculator.

Do not use a real-world artillery formula as a substitute for the in-game machine. The developer has explained that IRON NEST favors readable gameplay over a completely realistic model, including its unusual elevation behavior. The public calculator is the authoritative interface for ordinary play.

Load the exact combination on the card

Requisition the shell and enough powder for the planned shot. Check the shell label before cycling it into loading position. Follow the station’s current hint sequence: stage the correct round, engage the loading mechanism, add the specified charges, complete the bridge and breech operations, and wait until the gun state allows elevation.

Community operator guides warn that a loaded shell or charge may not offer a simple unload path. Whether that remains true for every public 1.0 state should be checked in the current interface, so prevention is better than relying on recovery. Keep the firing card visible and count powder deliberately. If the wrong charge count is already committed, calculate for the actual load instead of applying the old elevation.

Set bearing, elevation, and armed gun

Rotate toward the card’s bearing. Use the fast control for the large movement and the fine control for the last adjustment where the current interface provides both. Small angular errors grow with range, so “close enough” at the dial can become a large miss on the map.

Set elevation only after the loading and breech state permits it. The two guns can have separate states; confirm which barrel received the shell, which elevation control you moved, and which arming lever is active. Do not arm both merely because there are two barrels. Fire the side specified by the plan, or both only when the objective and both loads genuinely support it.

Before pulling the cord, say the checklist aloud: correct target, correct origin and range, correct shell, actual powder count, bearing, elevation, loaded side, armed side. This ten-second pause catches most expensive mistakes.

Read the impact and make one correction

After firing, return to the map and wait for the evidence the mission supplies. An impact mark or reconnaissance photo can show whether the shot was left/right, short/long, or centered with the wrong effect. Classify the error before moving a control.

  • A directional error suggests the map origin, target position, or bearing needs review.
  • A range error suggests the measured distance, powder count, or elevation does not match the card.
  • No useful target effect suggests the wrong shell or target classification, even if the impact was accurate.
  • A completely unexpected location suggests a stale card, wrong gun state, or solution prepared before a reposition.

Change only the suspected variable and build a new card when geometry or charge count changed. Keeping the original marks lets you compare rather than guess.

Protect campaign progress and version scope

Finish the mission correctly and dismiss the post-mission newspaper before leaving. The newspaper is part of the official mission loop and, according to the developer FAQ, Challenge scores are saved after a correct completion and newspaper dismissal. Avoid forcing the game closed during a save transition.

If a crash is followed by missing progress or failure to enter a mission, first confirm Steam has installed PATCH 1.0 (1558) or later public content. Verify game files and preserve the existing save before trying a reset. The Support hub keeps patch-confirmed problems separate from unverified file paths and destructive fixes.

This guide never uses Demo missions as a shortcut. AppID 4300500 is a separate Demo, and 4300490 is a Playtest/Beta relation. Their control hints and balance may help identify terminology, but they do not override what the public base game displays.

Beginner questions

What should I memorize first?

Memorize the order of stations, not exact numbers: teleprinter, map, calculator, requisition/loading, rotation/elevation, arming, firing, impact review. Numbers change with the target and shot.

Why did a precise calculator result still miss?

The calculator can only process the inputs it receives. Recheck the target estimate, the Nest-to-target origin, actual charge count, bearing, elevation, and which gun fired.

Should I start with Campaign or Challenge?

Start with Campaign to learn the authored sequence and onboard systems. Challenge Missions are the repeatable scoring layer and make more sense after the base loop is comfortable.

Is there a health bar to manage?

The developer FAQ says the Nest does not use a conventional health system. Mission failure and counter-battery pressure still create operational limits, so follow the current objective rather than searching for an ordinary health meter.
