IRON NEST: Heavy Turret Simulator public version 1.0 is single-player. Its two official core modes are the authored Campaign and replayable Challenge Missions. Official material also describes Challenge scoring, leaderboards, and a Chill mode that tracks cumulative confirmed kills. Multiplayer, Workshop, console, and VR belong to roadmap status and must not be presented as playable 1.0 features.
2950790, Windows public 1.0. The developer FAQ is the authority for shipped-mode boundaries and plans; dates and implementation details not stated there are not inferred.Choose Campaign for authored progression
Campaign is the story route. Missions begin with teleprinter orders, require map interpretation and firing solutions, and end with a newspaper that reports the operation and advances the world. The developer estimates roughly 8–12 hours to complete every mission once without replaying, based on internal and community playtests.
Choose Campaign when you want structured onboarding, named operations, mission medals, story choices, and the base sequence for unlocking or understanding systems. Complete a mission through its normal newspaper and sleep/transition flow. Do not treat a Challenge strategy as a campaign solution: objectives, target variation, scoring pressure, and requisition assumptions can differ.
The Campaign Mode Guide explains how to prepare a first run without spoiling individual targets. The Missions section is the route index when you need help with a particular operation.
Choose Challenge for repeatable scoring
Challenge Missions are designed for replayability. The developer says they use procedurally varied targets, unlockable ammunition and reconnaissance abilities, and Steam leaderboards. A run therefore rewards efficient plotting and operational planning rather than memorizing one fixed target sheet.
Before starting, understand the scoring objective shown by the current mode, available requisition, counter-battery pressure, and how a correct completion is recorded. The FAQ states that Challenge saves the highest score from a single run after the mission is completed correctly and the end newspaper is dismissed. If a Discord account is linked, at least one mission must be played before data synchronizes. These details matter when a good score appears missing.
Prepare several firing solutions before releasing time pressure where the mode allows it. Group targets by similar bearing, reserve reconnaissance for uncertain clusters, and avoid consuming the last response to counter-battery too early. Exact costs and timers are public-build values, not evergreen rules.
Understand Chill or Uncontested play
The developer FAQ says Chill Mode tracks cumulative confirmed kills across all completed runs, unlike Challenge’s single-run high score. Community discussion also uses “Uncontested” for a lower-pressure or endless-style experience. Because the visible mode label and rules can change, use the current menu to confirm whether Chill and Uncontested are the same presentation or distinct entries in your build.
Choose this style when you want to practice the operator loop, compare ammunition, or pursue cumulative performance without treating one mistake as a failed ranked run. Finish the run correctly so confirmed results are recorded. Do not use a cumulative kill total to compare directly with a Challenge high score; they measure different things.
Read leaderboards with the right scope
The developer also points to a dedicated IRON NEST website for leaderboards. Reach it from an official developer-controlled link rather than a same-name third-party site.
Current multiplayer status
Version 1.0 launched as fully single-player. The developer FAQ says the base game is planned to receive multiplayer in which each player commands a separate Nest on the same map, with cooperative and competitive concepts discussed. No shipped date, public mode list, or compatibility promise is stated.
The same FAQ separately discusses a future standalone co-op game where players share one platform. No public AppID was verified for that project in this audit. Keep it separate from AppID 2950790. A plan for a future title is not a hidden DLC or current mode.
When multiplayer arrives, a fresh product/version review must confirm branch, saves, cross-play, player count, hosting, progression, and whether current guides remain valid.
Workshop, VR, consoles, and expansion status
Steam Workshop support is described as seriously considered, with tools explored, but not promised or dated. Console ports and VR are planned after the PC priority according to the FAQ, with details deferred to future announcements. The launch announcement promises more content, missions, skirmish modes, features, music, eventual multiplayer, and a proper expansion, but does not make those items available today.
Do not create configuration, mod, console, VR, or expansion guides until the corresponding product and implementation are public. The Steam Store currently has no DLC AppID listed for the base game, and the cat companion is included in the base game rather than sold separately.
Pick a mode by player goal
- Choose Campaign for story, authored operations, medals, endings, and first-time learning.
- Choose Challenge for repeatable variable targets, single-run score optimization, and unlock progression.
- Choose Chill/Uncontested for lower-pressure practice and cumulative confirmed kills, subject to the current menu label.
- Use the leaderboard only after completing the run’s required end state and understanding the metric.
- Wait for an official announcement before treating multiplayer, Workshop, VR, consoles, or an expansion as playable.
Mode FAQ
Is the game co-op now?
No. Public 1.0 is single-player. Multiplayer for the base game and a separate future co-op project are plans, not current modes.
Does Campaign score use the Challenge leaderboard?
No official source supports combining them. Campaign progression and medals are distinct from Challenge’s single-run high score.
Why was my Challenge score not saved?
Confirm the mission was completed correctly and the newspaper was dismissed. If using Discord integration, the FAQ says at least one mission must be played after linking before synchronization.
Is Chill the same as sandbox?
Official FAQ wording confirms Chill’s cumulative-kill behavior. “Sandbox” and “Uncontested” are player search terms; verify the current menu before using them as exact mode names.
