Tune IRON NEST performance from official minimum and recommended targets using controlled graphics changes, thermal checks, and reproducible reports.

IRON NEST’s official minimum target is an average 30 FPS at 720p on low settings, with performance varying by configuration and thermal conditions. Start by measuring one repeatable scene, then change resolution or one graphics group at a time. Do not install an unverified optimizer or promise a universal launch option.

Compare hardware with the official tiers

Minimum lists a 64-bit system, Intel Core i5-4460 or AMD FX-8350, 4 GB RAM, Intel UHD or AMD Vega 8 graphics, DirectX 10, and 5 GB storage. The target note is 30 FPS average at 720p low and recommends a dedicated GPU for smoother play.

Recommended lists an i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 2600, 8 GB RAM, GTX 1060 6 GB or RX 580 8 GB, DirectX 10, and 5 GB storage. These are reference tiers, not guarantees for every background workload or thermal environment.

Establish a clean baseline

Update Windows, install a stable GPU driver, restart, close unnecessary overlays/background capture, verify files, and use the game’s default preset. Record native resolution, display mode, frame cap, hardware, driver, patch, and the same mission location.

Watch whether low performance is constant, appears during screen shake/effects, grows after time, or occurs only in menus. Those patterns lead to different diagnoses.

Reduce load in a useful order

Lower output resolution or render scaling first when GPU-bound. Then reduce the current settings associated with shadows, effects, or post-processing if exposed. Retest after each change. Keep map and text readability high enough to operate accurately.

PATCH 1.0 (1558) added a Motion Blur toggle for screen-shake events. Disable it for comfort or clarity; do not claim it alone increases frame rate without measurement.

Check memory, storage, and heat

On a 4 GB minimum system, background applications can compete for memory. Close browsers and capture tools during a test. Keep free storage beyond the nominal install size so Steam can patch normally.

Monitor temperatures and clock behavior with trusted system tools. If performance declines after sustained play, clean airflow, power mode, and thermal throttling deserve attention. Do not bypass hardware safety limits.

Separate stutter from input trouble

A focused lever can intentionally change how mouse or stick movement behaves. Release the station and test camera motion. PATCH 1.0 (1558) improved cases where the mouse could not move after loading the menu or a mission; update before blaming frame rate.

Capture frame-time behavior when possible. A smooth low frame rate, intermittent asset stutter, and frozen input require different reports.

Steam Deck and Proton

Do not apply a Windows-only driver or registry workaround to SteamOS.

Build a performance report

Include CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, storage, Windows version, GPU driver, resolution, preset, frame cap, patch, mission/scene, duration, observed FPS or frame time, temperature if known, and changed setting. State whether the problem reproduces after a clean restart.

This evidence is more actionable than “low FPS,” and it avoids universal advice from one configuration.

Validate the chosen preset

Test the same scene cold and after a longer session, then complete one operation with map text and dials readable. Record average behavior and disruptive lows rather than one peak FPS. If temperatures or clocks degrade later, report that separately from scene-specific GPU load. Preserve the default preset so every tweak remains reversible.

Retest after firing, map use, and a mission transition, because those workloads differ. Note whether a setting improves frame pacing but makes fine dials or intelligence unreadable. The best operational preset is the lowest-cost configuration that preserves stable interaction and accurate information, not simply the one with the largest FPS counter.
